Trying to find a way to make a true pixel screen

At the moment i'm trying to find a way to use planes to impact "pixels" into glowing, when any part of a plane touches one of these "pixels" it glows but so far i can't find any way to do that or if it's the most efficient way to go about this

i don't want to use UVs to animate the lights because that would take too long, i'd rather use planes or other objects to make the "pixels" glow

If there is any way with (free) addons (like animation nodes) please let me know

i'm using this to try to make a pixelated monitor face on a character i'm working on

please don't use the compositor

i was hoping to find one that didn't need an image texture and just used an emissive material, each 'pixel' would be impacted by a plane or geometry, much like how dynamic paint works, however the only problem with dynamic paint is that it's slow

use animation-nodes if it helps but make sure that the 'screen' part can be parented, i tried using a matrix but i can't find a way to make the effected part glow using a falloff controller and rotate the matrix to a plane

something like this effect: https://blenderartists.org/t/animatable-pixel-matrix-display/1126033/11

but instead of using textures or dynamic paint i want to use geometry to paint out what's shown on the screen

a bit like how the blocks remesh modifier works but in a grid, i can animate the planes to make different shapes and the remesh modifier pixelizes the mesh

a pixel grid affected by geometry where when the geometry touches said grid it does something: like move forward slightly or turns up the strength in an emission material, until the geometry is moved off
