Prior to Blender version 2.8, Layers were used to separate objects in a scene. This tag is specifically for questions related to using layers in blender 2.79 or earlier.

Why is my Shadow Catcher layer shadow-pass entirely black?
Did you add light sources? I get the same effect when I try to render an object without first adding light sources. If you do have light sources, make sure they are positioned correctly.
