May 8, 2014 at 15:54 comment added Thom Blair III CodeMonkey, I just heard from the Blender programmers/developers and they said the reason the booleans do not work on planes is because booleans are only designed to work on manifold meshes, i.e. meshes that have an inside. So, if you want to give your planes a very minimal thickness, you can then use booleans on them. If you add a Solidify modifier to your plane, the booleans should then work. Hope this helps!
May 7, 2014 at 23:58 comment added CodeMonkey While it doesn't work too very well in my particular example, it does indeed work for less complicated examples. I guess I'll consider it a bug or room for enhancement, but otherwise your steps are indeed "supposed" to be the easy way to do what I'm trying to do. :-)

May 7, 2014 at 18:01 comment added Thom Blair III Can you upload your blend file so I can see exactly how your planes are set up & see how best to guide you? If you need a place to upload to, you can use PasteAll.org -- it's very easy to use: pasteall.org/blend . Please also edit your answer to include a screenshot of exactly which planes you want to perform this operation on so we'll know exactly where to focus. Thanks! :)
May 7, 2014 at 17:55 comment added Thom Blair III Ah hah, yes, my example differs from yours because my planes are indeed the same width. That does indeed cause one plane to disappear. I'll have to rethink how to fix this. Sorry for the confusion!
May 7, 2014 at 17:55 comment added CodeMonkey They are both on Boolean. I do find that it's "working" but only for one plane while deleting the other :-(
May 7, 2014 at 17:53 comment added Thom Blair III Make sure neither Boolean is set to "Difference", otherwise planes will disappear until you set it to "Intersect" or "Union".
May 7, 2014 at 17:46 comment added CodeMonkey Or what happens if you shift one to the side?

May 7, 2014 at 17:42 comment added CodeMonkey Hmm... I can set the Boolean for one just fine, but when I go to set the Boolean for the other, it disappears immediately when I select the other object before even hitting apply. I wonder if your example differs from mine because my planes don't align so perfectly? What happens if you shrink the width of one of your planes. Does it still work?

May 7, 2014 at 17:22 comment added CodeMonkey Ok, but fyi, if I did make them separate objects, they are still just part of a much larger object that I'd want to reconnect again.
May 7, 2014 at 17:12 comment added Thom Blair III Ah hah! I didn't realize the planes were part of the same object. Yes, for this technique, you'd have to separate the planes into different objects. I'll update my answer to show you how to do that.
May 7, 2014 at 16:51 comment added CodeMonkey This looks like an amazing answer and I'm attempting to try it out. I'm thinking we have a bit of a difference, however. When trying to apply the Boolean modifier, it tells me that I can't do so in edit mode. But if I'm not in edit mode, then I cannot select the plane I want to do this on. They're not their own separate objects, they're two planes within the same object. Must I first break the planes apart? Thanks for the response, btw!
