The answer was incredibly simple.actually turned out to be that I had not selected texture mode. Once I selected texture mode, put the object into edit mode, and selected all of the verticesa previously rendered image open that was displaying over the uv map appearededitor. Whenever I closed that image everything showed up as it normally would in the UV/Image Editor windowexpected.

The answer actually turned out to be that I had a previously rendered image open that was displaying over the uv editor. Whenever I closed that image everything showed up as expected.
