Unless you guys have done it more neatly, first :) On your rotation problem.. I've gone via trimmed curves, and a tweak of 'Curve to Points' rotation.
Jul 7, 2023 at 8:41 | comment | added | Gordon Brinkmann | @RobinBetts As long as it's used for an icosphere like mentioned in the question I'm not worried about the length as it is roughly the same everywhere so he could adjust the scale or the original object. But what I'm struggling with is getting the long pieces not only centered on the edge with Z pointing outwards (that's easy), but aligning them lengthwise with the edge...

Hello and welcome to Blender.SE! Have you tried using Mesh to Points (set to Edge)?

Jul 7, 2023 at 5:58 | comment | added | Michael | Thanks -- I haven't really done anything that needs to be recreated though. My question is about how to even get started on it.
Jul 7, 2023 at 5:26 | comment | added | Chris | Hi Michael - i recommend providing a blend file so people don't have to rebuild everything manually on their own. By that you will attract more people to your question.
