In a scene with more than one object, is it possible to export that one object without deleting every other object, exporting it, then undoing the deletes?

Yes , most exporters have the option to only export selected objects.

You can find this option under File -> Export -> <your exporter>, e.g. STL or OBJ. The relevant checkbox is "Selection Only".

In Blender 4.1, this can be done through the following steps:

  1. Select your objects
  2. Go to File > Export > Click your Export Option
  3. As seen in the image below, check Selection Only under Include in the right panel.
