I successfully imported a Houdini vellum sim into Blender using an alembic.

The sim/alembic consists of four vellum objects interacting with each other.

The alembic in Blender is now basically one object, as it happens when importing an alembic.

But I really want to separate the four single objects again somehow for individual shading, different materials etc.

What would be the way to do this?

I already tried marking one of the objects in Edit Mode and separating it from the rest, which acts kind of weird and still puts the applied material to all four objects anyway.
