I am trying to add some soft body dynamics to this mesh but first I want to get rid of all of the overlapping/facing edges (I am not sure if that is even the right description). Basically I made this mesh in tilt brush using a brush that is essentially a long tube wrapped together to look like intestines. When I bring the model into blender I have all these unnecessary touching edges/planes that are completely hidden from the viewer. How do I make this mesh 'solid' to reduce the number of vertices and make physics possible with my cpu.

I don't want to lose any gaps that exist in the intestines, but I do want to get rid of any spots where the intestines touch eachother and overlap. I have tried all mesh-> clean up options to no success. I have included some images and the original blend file. Thanks in advance. enter image description here
