so far i can do this manually, but it gets pretty labor intensive if you have more than 20 frames.

Right now this is how im approaching this:

  1. Convert each frame into a polygon curve, adding 0.01 to the bevel depth to get the mesh showing.
  2. Convert each polygon curve into a mesh.
  3. Animate each object's visibilty on/off.

Is there a simpler way to approach this? Having the option of taking a grease pencil animation and converting it to a mesh with is visibility keyed is really robust. You could then use the mesh generated and import it into other platforms using the alembic cache.
