When i load an object using:

mesh = bpy.data.objects['Cube']

I want to be able to average its normals but it doesn't have any of the methods of the context object.

I've looked into editing the normals of the mesh manually but everything i try has no effect on the mesh, as in any time i change any normal value of the mesh nothing happens as if i didn't change anything.

I've tried the following methods, among others.

Setting custom normals without customdata_custom_splitnormals_add() operator?

Set vertex normal in a stable manner with python

At the end of the day i just want to be able to edit a meshes normals without having to, get context object>set active>toggle edit mode>edit normals>toggle edit mode>deselect object

I would very much appreciate any help.
