I'm very new to Blender (I'm using 2.8), and I'm a bit confuse by the different ways to add relatioships constraints.

After having played for a while with the Follow Path, the Child Of and the Armature constraint (that are referred to as Relatioship Constraints in the property editor) here's what I found:

in all 3 cases, when I add these constraint by pressing Crtl+P and using the context menu that pops up, everything always works exactly the way I'd expect. You have several options like keep tranform, etc.

But, if I want to add these constraints from the property editor, almost everytime the "child" objects are warped or moved away (if it has some previous deformations).

Btw, constraints added with ctrl+P are not listed in the property editor of any object. What I think is happening is that adding a constraint through the property editor is a bit like adding a modifier, while adding it by ctrl+P is like adding it and applying immediatly- but tell me if I'm wrong.

But the set of available options seem a bit mismatched in the 2 cases. So I guess I have 3 questions:

  • for the Follow Path, how do I set it up in such a way that position is modified by the curve, but starting from the current position of the object? I'm assuming this is basically the same problem Keep Tranform is supposed to solve

  • for Child transform: how do I keep transform? There are two buttons here, Set Inverse and Clear Inverse, but how to use them is not clear to me.

  • for Armature: how to keep the mesh tranform and not deform it horribly? Also, bonus question: how to I set up Automatic Weights? This is obviously a very important option, so I think it should be possible to do it from the property editor.

So if the answer is that the property editor options are still a bit limited in Blender, that is fine, even if I think ideally it should present all the available options, since it is much better than shortcuts for discoverability reasons, and the possibility of quickly removing or modifying the constraint.

But most of all I want to be sure that I'm getting this right.
