I have a fairly complex scene that is running pretty slowly (not just to render, but the whole GUI is running sluggishly).

I think it is because I have a smoke simulation in the scene but I am not sure.

I noticed that when I select the Texture Paint tab, the entire project runs faster.

In both Layout and Texture Paint mode I have the Viewport Shading set to solid or look dev but there is way more responsiveness in the Texture Paint mode.

Additionally, I have several sprites in my scene and although in other modes you can not see through the alpha channel (it renders as black) in the Texture Paint mode the alpha channel does not render (desired behavior).

Does anybody know what the difference is or what settings I can check to make the Layout mode function more like the texture paint mode?

I am using Blender 2.8
