I’m trying to model a piece of a Hershey’s Chocolate.

I spent time cleaning up the text and simplifying the Boolean Op to insert it.

I turned on smooth shading and auto-smoothed the normals to fix the surface artifacts (I just learned about auto-smooth). There was still some slight warping around the text, so I gave the letters sharp edges and that cleaned it up.

The only problem is that now I want to bevel the text slightly (so it’s not perfectly sharp) and I’m experiencing difficulties. Any advice?

I used a vertex group to bevel everything else.

I tried setting a bevel modifier vertex group for the letters only but when I selected the top and bottom edge loop of each letter to assign it kept including the inner faces in the vertex group which caused the modifier warp it all beyond recognition.

Not sure what to do.
