What's the reason behind blenders intensive use of memory when it comes to video editing/tracking?

I'm using Blender 2.8 and currently have a ~15 second clip loaded (@50fps, 3840x2160, 99779kbps, MP4 file) that's part of a larger ~28 second clip whos file size amounts to 345 MB total.

However, preloading (prefetching) that 345MB (or ~180MB clipped portion of video) amounts to a whopping 23GB of system resources. enter image description here

What's the reason behind this? Is there a way around it?

  • $\begingroup$ You can convert clip to image sequnce with 50% of HD resolution and use it for tracking. I had a positive experience with it. $\endgroup$ – Serge L Sep 4 at 14:09
