I'm a bit lost with this. I've managed to composite using a video, but that was following a book and I still struggled. I guess compositing is not my forte... At the moment I'm struggling to render or put together 3D objects or effects using a simple image background. I've noticed in a couple of tutorials, such as on Blender Guru, that an image is on its own Render Layer. How do you do this? This Heat Haze tutorial has a dessert image on its own RenderLayer:

I've tried setting up nodes from forum threads to get it working, but I've been unsuccessful. I read earlier that compositing with PNG images is broken or something...? I've been pointed to other threads or workarounds, but I've not been able to get them working properly at all. :(
