I've seen people using this function in python, when preparing a mesh for export. I'm not sure what its purpose is though. Could someone explain it to me? When should I use it? I know what tessellation is, but I'm not sure how it's relevant here. I initially though that maybe it is used to triangulate the mesh, but as far as I've seen, triangulating a mesh is always done via a bmesh operator. Blender API documentation isn't much help either in this case.
